Skincare solutions for everyone

I grew up with brown skin, that tans easily, grows hair easily, dries out easily, breaks out easily and was anything but easy to treat. Not because my skin conditions were difficult to treat, but because my skin color was. I was told that over-the-counter products were not suitable for my skin — either not effective enough or too harsh. I was told prescription-strength products also were not suitable for my skin. I had difficulty finding a physician who was comfortable treating my skin tone and skin type even twenty years later in the year 2020! There have been so many advances in skincare products, skincare procedures and devices, but the progress in provider education has yet to catch up. I decided that I needed to help others who are not in a position to seek out the clinical studies, the medical grade products and devices, and the resources needed to treat their own skin. I at least have a medical degree and twenty years of my own research into skincare as I struggled with treating my own acne, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and acne scarring, and finding those who could provide safe and effective laser hair removal and skin resurfacing procedures. I wish I knew then – in my teens – what I know now: prevention is key, medical grade and prescription strength formulations are more effective, invest in health (skincare) over aesthetics (makeup) first, and maintenance is essential. I wish I had the resources I have now because I could have avoided having to “fix” damage to my skin and instead learned how to care for it and prevent damage to it.

First, let’s discuss skin types. You will be asked to classify your skin based on its ability to tan. After your physician consultation, which will include further questioning and a skin exam, your skin type will be determined. Here is a rough guide of the Fitzpatrick skin types:

  • I – Ivory white skin. Burns easily. Never Tans. Usually, very light skin tone and light eyes.
  • II – White skin. Burns easily . Tans minimally, with difficulty.
  • III – White skin. Burns moderately. Tans moderately and uniformly.
  • IV – Beige-olive skin. Lightly tanned. Burns minimally. Tans moderately and easily.
  • V – Moderate brown or tanned skin. Rarely burns. Tans profusely.
  • VI – Dark brown or black skin. Never burns. Tans profusely. Usually, very dark skin tone and dark eyes.

* Ethnicity and heritage is also considered in skin typing, and often affects the safety profile of certain products, devices, and procedures

Our mission is to serve all Fitzpatrick skin types, particularly, the “difficult to treat” ones which are types IV-VI for which there are added safety considerations needed as well as experienced clinicians. I have treated Type IV-V skin my entire life and hope I can help others who are in the position I was. I felt alone, helpless, and despondent. I had accepted that I would just have “bad skin”, which included a decade of daily breakouts, resultant scarring, coarse unwanted hair, and a constant and inconclusive search for effective products and makeup to cover all my imperfections. I otherwise felt great – I was healthy, active, and mostly happy but that was not reflected in my skin. I have worked to provide solutions that will make your skin healthier on a cellular level, which will in turn make it appear healthier on the surface level.

Our treatments include the following:

  • Laser hair removal — using a device safe for all skin types and ability to remove hair in darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick Types IV-VI which is the spectrum of olive to dark brown/black colored skin)
  • Collagen induction therapy — using the SkinPen microneedling device which is also safe for all skin types
  • Oxygen facials — uses a 3-step approach to superficial skin resurfacing: exfolation, infusion, and ultrasound using the Oxygeneo 3-in-1 superfacial device. This treatment can be performed on all skin types and the oxypods and serums come in various formulations to treat different skin concerns.
  • LED light therapy — uses blue light, red light, and infrared light to treat acne, wrinkles, and pain. We focus primarily on blue light for acne treatment and red light for wrinkles. The LED therapy can be added to any other treatment to boost the collagen/elastin-forming effects.
  • Glowbiotics skin treatments – chemical “peels” safe for all skin types. Effective skin treatments, without the peeling and downtime.

Our Mission

Devoted to you and your skin.

We want to take a holistic approach to skincare. Most people learn how to take care of their skin from their parents or other close relatives, whether it be directly by instruction or indirectly by observation. However, we are not often given tailored advice regarding the care of our largest organ – one which everyone can see!

Your journey through our clinic experience will include the following:

  • Every new client starts with a physician consultation. This includes a full medical, social, and skincare history, including examination and analysis of your skin
  • Then, the physician will develop a treatment plan to meet your needs and desired results
  • Your personalized skincare regimen may include skincare products, skin treatments (facials, peels), skin therapies such as LED light therapy, medical grade procedures such as laser resurfacing or collagen induction therapy with a microneedling device, or even referral to a dermatologist if needed
  • Keep in mind that skincare is ongoing care just like maintenance of any other aspect of your health. We will help you develop a sustainable plan to maintain the results you gain from the various procedures

Please refer to our website and instagram often for ongoing education on skincare, skin rejuvenation procedures, and clinic updates

To help get started, book a consultation and fill out our intake form which you will be prompted to fill after booking

Laser Hair Removal

The majority of us have some areas of unwanted hair that we either shave, pluck, wax, or cover up. Laser hair removal offers a longlasting solution. Over time, it is more cost effective than purchasing razors, wax or waxing sessions, depillatories, etc. It is also gentler on the skin as it is not tearing out hairs by the root but rather targeting the hairs at various growth phases. Multiple sessions are required as our hairs are each at different phases of growth and the laser must target them at certain phases in order to result in permanent hair reduction. Based on the body part, recommendations on timing of procedures will be made to ensure lasting results. Maintenance is key in order to achieve desired results. Most people will require at least 5 sessions spaced 4-8 weeks apart. Occasional follow up maintenance sessions can be done as needed although most find that >80% hair reduction is more than satisfactory and additional sessions are not needed in those cases.

Our laser

We use the Candela GentleYAG Pro 1064nm laser device.

How does the laser work?

The laser creates a beam of high-intensity light that penetrates deeply into skin tissue, where it delivers a controlled amount of targeted therapeutic heat. Candela’s patented Dynamic Cooling Device™ (DCD™) technology protects the upper layers of your skin with a cooling burst of cryogen. Together, the long-pulse laser and DCD cooling offer optimal treatment with minimal side effects

What can I expect during treatment?

Treatment will take place in the office. You will wear safety eyewear to protect your eyes from the laser light. The laser is guided to treatment areas with a handpiece. Each laser pulse may be preceded and followed by a short pulse of cooling spray. Treatments can take as little as a few minutes to as long as an hour, depending on the area and condition being treated.

Does it hurt?

Some patients may feel a slight discomfort with each laser pulse, sometimes described like the snapping of a rubber band on the skin. This discomfort resolves quickly and is minimized by Candela’s DCD cooling. Please communicate your discomfort levels with your practitioner as this can help guide treatment settings.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on the treatment you require and the condition of your skin. For hair removal, multiple treatments are required, as the process is most effective when the hair follicle is in its active growth phase. Other conditions may clear up in only one treatment, but many factors impact the efficacy of individual laser treatments, including the severity of the condition being treated.

How do I prepare for treatment?

Patients scheduled for hair removal should avoid plucking, electrolysis, waxing, sugaring, and depilatories, for six weeks prior to treatment. If you have a history of herpes simplex virus, notify the provider prior to your laser procedure and discuss with your PCP regarding any need for prophylactic antiviral therapy. Your skin should be clean shaven and thoroughly cleansed and dried. Remove any makeup, creams, oils, or self-tanning products. Do not tan, use spray tans, or topical tanning products for at least two weeks prior to treatment. The intended treatment area should not be exposed to sunlight or tanning booth light for 14 days prior to treatment. Prevent sun damage by using sunblock (SPF 30 or above) before and after your laser procedure (and forever, thereafter).

What can I expect after treatment?

A cool compress, gel pack, or aloe vera gel, may be applied for comfort following your treatment. Any redness or swelling should resolve within a few hours.

What precautions should I take after treatment?

After laser treatment, prevent sun exposure by applying sunblock (SPF 30 or above). In the first few days after treatment, do not scrub or cleanse the treated areas with abrasive skin cleansers.

Skin Rejuvenation

When topical skincare is not enough, there are a vast array of medical grade devices that can be used to heal the skin or even boost its own natural healing processes. No serum, ointment, cream, or supplement can quite deliver the results as quickly and effectively as a targeted procedure. Many of us have skin woes that have troubled us for years and even decades. This is because we are also developing new damage while trying to recover from old damage. This is why we develop a multifaceted skincare routine that involves remedies for current skin issues, procedures to maintain your results, and skincare products and procedures to prevent future damage.

Our skin rejuvenation procedures include collagen induction therapy using a microneedling pen, dermal remodeling using infrared light and bipolar radiofrequency energies, and laser skin rejuvenation.

Each of our devices offer unique methods of producing collagen and elastin. Some benefit from just one modality and others may need multiple modalities to achieve their desired results. We tailor our recommendations based on your skin assessment. We want to create a routine that is both maintainable and effective.

Skin Rejuvenation Devices

SkinPen®

SkinPen by Crown Aesthetics is FDA-cleared and clinically proven to safely and effectively treat facial acne scars in those ages 22 and up

For optimal results, at least three treatments, spaced 30 days apart, is recommended. Once desired results are achieved, maintenance every six months thereafter is recommended.

Microneedling can be used on all skin types and varied skin conditions as its primary effect is to induce collagen remodeling. We can all benefit from increased collagen remodeling! It is recommended to space out treatments at least by 4-6 weeks to allow for an adequate cycle of collagen remodeling and healing of the skin between sessions.

  • Single Session – $330
  • 3 session package – $880

eTwo

eTWO by Candela includes two handpieces (Sublime™ + Sublative™) which together provide complete facial rejuvenation, to achieve dermal remodeling and textural improvement at the same time

Sublime™

Combines infrared (IR) light and bi-polar radiofrequency (RF) energies to remodal the deep dermal layer of the skin by stimulating new collagen growth

The predictable heating of the deep dermis stimulates and shortens aged collagen fibers, resulting in immediate and longterm improvement of wrinkles

Sublative™

Fractionated bi-polar RF technology uses heat energy to encourage significant increases of collagen and elastin in the upper dermis, with low epidermal disruption

This means that the device is safe for darker skin types as it works at a targeted level of the epidermis

The energy is delivered through a matrix of pinpoint areas and the less affected tissue (i.e. healthy tissue) surrounding the matrix points may be stimulated by heat, which helps accelerate the healing process, leading to smoother, rejuvenated appearance of the skin

  • Single Session – $330
  • 3 session package – $880

GentleYAG Pro®

GentleYAG Pro is a LASER device by Candela that uses a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser which is optimal and safe for use in Skin Types IV-VI (i.e. skin types with higher levels of melanin)

Patented DCD™ (dynamic cooling device) provides consistent protection

Can be used for:

  • unwanted hair
  • vascular lesions
  • diffuse redness
  • leg veins
  • pigmented lesions
  • wrinkles
  • onychomycosis (nail fungus)
  • pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps)

Skincare

We will help shed your bad habits, damaged skin, scars, and signs of aging

Skincare is not a luxury, it is a necessity.

Skin has many layers and so our regimens will also contain many layers, steps, and treatments. Our skincare procedures performed by an aesthetic-trained provider will treat the epidermal layers of your skin. This will prep your skin for treatment of the deeper layers and will also help maintain the results of the other procedures and your daily skincare. The at-home skincare recommended will maintain healthy skin and further the rejuvenation process and also help prevent further damage. Additional factors such as diet, lifestyle, hydration, and sun exposure will further effect your skin, so be mindful of those habits (we can help!).

Celluma LED light therapy

What is Light Therapy?

Light Emitting Diode (LED) phototherapy is the application of light energy to tissue to obtain therapeutic benefits.  The energy is used to improve cellular performance.  Phototherapy is known for its healing and anti-inflammatory properties and has a variety of applications across many medical fields.  Research has shown that phototherapy can: increase circulation, accelerate tissue repair, decrease wrinkles, decrease inflammation, improve skin tone and wrinkles, texture and clarity, ease muscle and joint pain, stiffness, spasm and arthritis and kill acne bacteria, and much more.

Celluma® is unique and quite unlike any other low-level light therapy device available today. Based on NASA research, Celluma® delivers blue, red and near-infrared light energy simultaneously to safely treat a wide variety of conditions. Each wavelength is absorbed by different molecules that act as a signaling mechanism for different cellular processes. For example, some reduce inflammation and some kill bacteria, while others enhance localized circulation. Celluma® is FDA cleared to treat acne, wrinkles, and pain
